Decapod Crustaceans

The Laboratory of Decapod Crustaceans (LCD) develops research and trains human resources in the area of ecology and fisheries of crustaceans since the 1970s. Currently, Prof. Dr. Luiz Felipe Cestari Dumont is responsible for the LCD and directs research from taxonomy to the use of innovative tools such as molecular biology to identify populations and the use of side scan sonar to identify and quantify the marks left on the substrate by bottom trawls.

LCD also develops research in the area of characterization and quantification of discards associated with shrimp fisheries, an activity that tends to cause major impacts, especially in coastal environments.

The pink shrimp Penaeus paulensis is one of the most studied species, taking into account its economic and ecological importance. These studies include the analysis of prediction models on the recruitment of this species in the Patos Lagoon estuary.

Our lab is active in the Graduate Program in Biological Oceanography (PPGOB) at the master and doctoral levels.
